Reading Aloud to the Learner
Many people have favorite memories of listening to a parent or teacher read from a beloved book. For some, these times were the start of a love of books. Reading with your learner can extend to him or her the enjoyment of sharing a story.
Purposes
- To allow the learner to hear someone read with good expression and phrasing To enable the learner to use materials that are too hard to read independently
To expose the learner to fun, exciting, or beautiful literature thus building within the learner an interest in written material
How
- Read aloud to the learner.
The learner can either follow along in a copy of the material or sit next to you and look at your book.
Suggestions
- Use materials of interest to you and the learner. Make this a pleasant experience.
Materials may be on any reading level.
It is more important for the learner to hear you read than to follow along word by word in the book. If the learner becomes frustrated over losing the place while trying to follow along, invite the learner simply to listen.
