Gunning Fog Index

The Gunning Fog Index provides a simple way to determine the reading level of a text. You provide the text to be analyzed, and the computer gives you a Gunning Fog Index number. The complexity of the sentence structure and sentence content will determine the index number given. The index number you receive will tell you approximately the year and month of students who are reading similar texts.

For example, if the index number you receive is 5.2, then a student in his fifth grade year and second month should be capable of reading the text you submitted for analysis. Some assumptions and generalizations must be made to calculate an index number, so it may be above or below the actual level of the text.

A statistical report will also be generated for your use. The algorithm for the calculations done here was adapted from Robert Gunning's The Technique of Clear Writing, McGraw-Hall Book Co., 1968.
