Become a Tutor

What time commitment am I making if I become a tutor?

Tutors complete a 4-hour training course, which is offered on an ongoing individual basis.

To give the student time to get used to a new tutor and begin to make progress, we encourage tutors to commit to tutoring for at least six months.

Tutors meet with their student for one hour twice-a-week in a public place.

What does a tutor do?

After being trained, tutors are matched one-on-one with a literacy student. The job of a tutor is to help this student improve his or her reading skills.

A full-time staff is available to help give direction and answer questions as needed.

Do I need a degree or advanced training to tutor?

No. Much of what you'll need to know will be covered in the training session. What is required is the ability to read and the desire to help someone else who cannot.

What are the benefits of tutoring?

Tutors receive the opportunity to make a lasting difference in another person's life.

Tutors attend and learn from a free 4-hour training course and recieve a tutoring manual with practical suggestions and background information.

Tutors have access to an extensive library of teaching resources including basic reading programs, supplemental low-level reading material, and teaching software.

Tutors enjoy flexible volunteer hours. Tutoring times are based on the tutor's schedule.

How do I get started?

The first thing to do is call and schedule an appointment for a tutor training session.   The Bridgerland Literacy phone number is (435)716-9141.
