Listen to Me
Listen attentively as your child reads.
Take turns reading pages. The child is focusing on how to read, your reading helps keep the story alive.
If your child does not know a word, read to the end of the sentence and have them see if the meaning helps them discover the word.
Help them look for patterns in letters and sounds.
Tell them how proud you are of their efforts and skills.
Try using the phrase, "I can tell you are becoming a good reader because." then use such endings as "You stopped and sounded out that new word you didn't know." Or, "You were able to figure out that new word by using the words around it to learn what it might be." These are skills that good reader's use.
